Dixie Stampede, Dollywood Push Boys and Girls Club Project over the Top with $500,000 Donation

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (Dec. 17, 2015) — Thanks to a combined $500,000 donation from Dixie Stampede and The Dollywood Company, the new Pigeon Forge Boys and Girls Club soon will be reality. Dixie Stampede and Dollywood each donated $250,000 toward the project during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility on Thursday afternoon.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains has received an outpouring of support from the local community, but the donations from Dixie Stampede and Dollywood helped push the club beyond its goal of raising $2 million for the facility.

Jim Rule, Dixie Stampede President, and Jamie Parish, Dixie Stampede General Manager, joined Craig Ross, The Dollywood Company President, and Gene Scherrer, Dollywood General Manager, in making the donation during the ceremony.

“The Boys and Girls Club is an amazing example of an organization which makes a profound impact on the community it serves,” said Rule. “This donation is to benefit a group that provides wonderful services to our hosts’ families and is integral to the quality of life here in Pigeon Forge.”

Mark Ross, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director, said the donation enables the club to provide more area children with important services and programs to help them develop into the community leaders of tomorrow.

“Lady Bird Johnson said ‘Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them,’” said Mark Ross. “The outstanding commitment of Dixie Stampede and Dollywood shows just how much they believe in the future of Pigeon Forge.”

The $500,000 donation is in addition to the amount both properties already provide the club.

The new Pigeon Forge Boys and Girls Club facility, which will be located on property that was once the old city park, is slated to include a gym, recreation room, education and technology center, and more.

Take a Virtual Ride on Dollywood’s Lightning Rod; World’s Fastest Wooden Coaster To Open March 2016

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (November 17, 2015)— Dollywood is giving coaster fans a chance to jump aboard Lightning Rod, its newest record-breaking offering, before the final pieces of track are even in place!

Thanks to Los Angeles-based 3D Live, anyone with a smartphone can stream via YouTube 360 optimized, point-of-view footage of Dollywood’s Lightning Rod and take a virtual ride on the world’s fastest wooden coaster. The pioneering 3D technology is new to the amusement park industry and something 3D Live CEO Nathan Huber says will revolutionize the way guests visit a theme park.

“This year has been crazy for us,” Huber explained. “We’re doing a bunch of great new stuff, and we said ‘let’s jump in to this world (theme parks).’ This is something fun, and we see a huge future of bringing people virtually to theme parks.

“Imagine hospital patients that may never be able to go to a theme park. Now, this is at least the first step in bringing that experience to them. There is something about creating these immersive experiences; you can take something that would be difficult for them to experience and make it accessible. Now they can sit in their living room, put on a VR headset and be inside the park for a minute.”

The opportunity to work with Dollywood and its innovative new coaster was something Huber said was the perfect fit for his company’s groundbreaking technology.

“It is an honor,” Huber said. “I spent so much time in Tennessee (Huber graduated from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee) that it is an honor to be working with Dollywood. We love the opportunity to be able to explore and find ways to deliver information to people. We’re excited to continue pushing boundaries.”

Due to working on the footage for Dollywood, Huber already has been able to make several circuits of Lightning Rod – albeit virtually. When asked about his thoughts on the thrilling new ride, Huber was quick to respond.

“It is scary,” he said with a laugh. “I like scary rides. It looks like it is going to be a ride to freak me out when I get a chance to come to Tennessee to ride it, which is going to be as soon as possible. Watching this ride, I’m just like, ‘Wow!’”

To view the 3D Virtual Reality POV, visit https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JcgfQdYmBtg

Lightning Rod is the newest member of The Dollywood Company’s collection of award-winning attractions. In March 2012, Dollywood opened the $20 million Wild Eagle, the country’s first wing coaster. The company introduced RiverRush, Tennessee’s first and only water coaster, at Dollywood’s Splash Country in 2013. FireChaser Express, the nation’s first dual-launch family coaster, was added at Dollywood in 2014. Dollywood mainstays Thunderhead, consistently among the world’s top five wood coasters, Mystery Mine, Blazing Fury and Tennessee Tornado round out the park’s list of innovative coasters.

Fall Paints Dollywood with a Colorful Brush During National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration in October

PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (Sept. 24, 2015) – With sweet melodies drifting through the crisp, autumn air, Southern gospel music is well represented during Dollywood’s National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration presented by Humana (Oct. 2- 31).

Once again, Dollywood is home to a packed slate of Southern gospel’s premier talent. Among this year’s new acts are Ernie Hasse & Signature Sound (Oct. 4-5) and The Collingsworth Family (Oct. 7). Guests can see concerts from a number of returning Dollywood favorites including Guy Penrod (Oct. 16-17), The McKameys (Oct. 9-10), Karen Peck & New River (Oct. 2-3), The Isaacs (Oct. 19) and The Booth Brothers (Oct. 15-16). Many other artists take to the stage throughout the festival including special concerts on the Praise 96.3 FM and Singing News stages. Dollywood’s own Kingdom Heirs also play prominently throughout the festival. Incredibly, guests can experience more than 350 concerts, all free with park admission, during the festival. For a complete Southern gospel concert schedule, visit Dollywood.com/gospel.

“Some of my earliest memories of singing come from the days when my family would stand up on the stages of those little churches here in these beautiful mountains,” Dolly Parton said. “I’ll always remember how it felt when the trees were painted in those bright colors and the sounds of Southern gospel music echoed through the hills. I’m glad we’re able to recreate that for our guests thanks to these talented artists during my National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration. I love to see—and hear—Dollywood during this time of year!”

Although performing during the festival for the first time, The Collingsworth Family has made Dollywood’s award-winning rides, food and entertainment a tradition for years. After making many trips to the park, they are eager to share their talents with Dollywood guests.

“It’s with great excitement that we anticipate our first performances during this year’s National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration at Dollywood,” said Phil Collingsworth Sr. “After enjoying many Dollywood visits as an integral part of our family’s vacation schedule, it’s a delight to be a part of the celebration professionally. Thank you to Dollywood for offering 30 years of great American family fun!”

The McKameys, who hail from nearby Clinton, Tennessee, also have enjoyed spending time at Dollywood through the years.

“Singing at Dollywood has always been a great honor for us,” said Peg McKamey. “The facilities are wonderful and there is always an atmosphere of worship. It is a family-oriented place, and we are so blessed to have Southern gospel music there during the month of October. We know the fans will enjoy every day of the festival!”

Additionally, Dollywood’s own master craftsmen are joined by more than 40 visiting artisans from around the country. Daily craft demonstrations illustrate how many of America’s vital products were made for centuries. During the festival, Dollywood also celebrates Tennessee Craft Week, Oct. 2-11. Celebrating 50 years, Tennessee Craft, formerly The Tennessee Association of Craft Artists, is a nonprofit organization working to continue Tennessee’s fine craft tradition.

Among the crafts Dollywood guests can observe during the National Southern Gospel and Harvest Celebration are banjo and fiddle making, loom weaving, rug hooking, basket weaving, paper marbling, felt hat making and much more. Products for purchase also include dulcimers, various forms of jewelry, chainsaw carving, bentwood boxes, stained glass artwork, and more.

Finally, Dollywood perfectly captures the essence of fall with perfectly themed menus which take advantage of the crops from a bountiful autumn harvest. Special food locations feature various recipes including fresh apples, corn and much more.

Dollywood Earns Three Golden Ticket Awards; Park Honored for Entertainment, Friendliness, Christmas Event

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2015)—Dollywood continues to rack up accolades from Amusement Today’s annual Golden Ticket Awards, this year earning three “best of” awards and placing in the top-five in seven additional categories during the magazine’s 2015 awards ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Luna Park in New York City.

“Every time they announce the Golden Tickets results, I am so proud to hear how much folks love and respect Dollywood,” Dolly Parton said. “This is our 30th anniversary season, and if you would have told me all those years ago that we would win all these awards, I’m not sure even I could have dreamed it! I truly am thankful for all of the guests who have continued to support us and for all the new folks who visit us each year! I also am grateful for the dedicated team at my Dollywood Company for providing our guests a memorable experience when they come see us.”

Dollywood’s three Golden Ticket Awards are

  • Friendliest Park, for the fourth consecutive year;
  • Best Shows, Dollywood’s seventh consecutive victory in this category;
  • Best Christmas Event, the only park to ever earn this award, Dollywood celebrates its eighth consecutive win.

Dollywood also ranked in seven additional categories:

  • Best Food, second place;
  • Cleanest Park, second place;
  • Best Water Park for Dollywood’s Splash Country, third place;
  • Best Park, fourth place;
  • Best Water Ride for Dollywood’s Mountain Slidewinder, fourth place;
  • Best Wooden Coaster for Dollywood’s Thunderhead, fifth place;
  • Best Landscaping, fifth place.

Calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today, the industry’s leading trade publication, the Golden Ticket Awards are the results of a detailed survey sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world in balanced geographical regions. Voters are asked to rate the “best” in 25 categories such as best parks, roller coasters, water rides, shows, kids’ area, landscaping and Christmas events.

The Golden Ticket Awards are the most sought after awards in the business of amusements and attractions. The awards have become the subject of much discussion by park aficionados the world over and garnered mentions in such notable media outlets as USA TODAY and the Chicago Tribune, and by the late radio newsman Paul Harvey. The awards also were the topic of a one-hour Travel Channel documentary.

Dollywood was recognized in 2010 at the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions with the Applause Award in recognition of a park whose management, operations and creative accomplishments have inspired the industry with its foresight, originality and sound business development.

Additional details and audition requirements can be found at www.DollywoodAuditions.com.

Many performers have launched their careers in Dollywood’s world-famous shows and productions. Janelle Arthur, an American Idol alum, started her career by playing a young Dolly Parton in Paradise Road at Dollywood. She has returned to the park multiple times following her time on American Idol to entertain guests.

Nathan Watt, who now performs at Dollywood, came to the park via his audition in Atlanta.

“I could not think of a better work environment than the one I’ve been given at Dollywood,” Watt said. “Everyone is so kind and sincere; that only makes me want to work harder. During the audition, everyone had a positive attitude and a smile on their face.”

Kara McDowell was discovered during the 2014 Nashville auditions. She says her first year at Dollywood has provided her with a unique opportunity.

“The Nashville casting call for Dollywood Entertainment was one of the most stress-free auditions I’ve ever experienced,” said McDowell. “Not only was it incredibly professional, but the producers and casting director were kind and attentive to everyone’s needs. I had no idea how many doors would be opened for me in this wonderful company. I’ve shared the stage with great talent. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.”

Winner of six Golden Ticket Awards for Best Shows, Dollywood Entertainment provides the perfect venue for performers and technicians to share their skills.

Dolly’s Homecoming Parade To Feature Firefighting Theme

Pigeon Forge salutes hometown superstar Dolly Parton on May 2

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (April 2014) – Firefighters, fire trucks and Dolly Parton are in the combustible mix on May 2 when Pigeon Forge salutes the world-famous entertainer with the annual Dolly’s Homecoming Parade.

Thousands line the Parkway for Dolly's Homecoming Parade.

Thousands line the Parkway for Dolly’s Homecoming Parade.

The parade, which will travel on the Parkway through the center of town, will carry the theme of the Dollywood theme park’s newest thrill ride, the FireChaser Express roller coaster.

Traveling right behind Parton on her own FireChaser Express float will be Pigeon Forge’s newest piece of firefighting equipment, a massive 100-foot ladder truck.

The parade starts at 6 p.m. at Traffic Light 6 and goes north to Traffic Light 3. Spectators are invited to line both sides of the route.

“Dolly’s Homecoming Parade is a rite of spring for us. We want to salute Dolly for the many wonderful contributions she makes to our community, and the parade lets fans shout out their support, too,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism, which organizes the parade.

More than 110 floats, marching bands, vehicles and organizations will be in the parade, including the marching bands from Pigeon Forge High School and Sevier County High School.

A special participant is the 190-member Crossroads Christian Church Choir from Newburgh, Ind., which will perform at the Dollywood theme park the next day.

Others in the parade include Girl Scouts, twirling groups, Shriners, veterans groups, the Boys and Girls Club, equestrian clubs and the Friends of the Smokies, the private sector support group for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

“It’s a big parade with a small-town flavor and an international superstar in the lead float. It’s quite an event,” Downey said.

Dollywood’s FireChaser Express Blasts Off; Nation’s First Dual-Launch Family Coaster

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (April 2014)—Already home to a number of innovative family attractions, Dollywood theme park has added to its stellar roster with the debut of FireChaser Express, the nation’s first dual-launch family coaster that travels both forward and backward.

Boasting a 39-inch minimum height requirement, FireChaser Express invites families to enjoy the exciting journey as a group. Perched 12 stories above the park’s Wilderness Pass area, FireChaser Express launches twice, blasting riders forward and backward on a winding 2,427-foot track. The coaster is projected from the loading station traveling from zero to 16 mph in just 1.1 second. Near the end of the ride, a backward launch from zero to 20 mph in two seconds sends FireChaser Express hurtling back to the station in the opposite direction.

“I’m truly excited about FireChaser Express because families are going to be able to ride together as a group, many of them for the first time,” Dolly Parton said. “Children around the age of four are tall enough to ride, so a lot of kids are going to get on their first coaster right here at Dollywood. I’m thrilled we can give families a special memory to hold on to forever!”

After the initial launch, a 79-foot lift propels FireChaser Express through a “trick track” section where the passenger trains twist from side to side. Riders also encounter two helices and six zero-gravity moments on a journey that lasts two minutes and 19 seconds. FireChaser Express features three 14-passenger trains with an hourly capacity of 750 riders.

Volunteer recruits are invited to climb aboard FireChaser Express as it launches from Station 7 in Dollywood’s Wilderness Pass on a thrilling adventure to save the Smokies from potential fire hazards.

Along the way, guests flash across mountainous terrain, through giant fire towers, and dodge fallen telephone poles and crashed rockets. During the excursion, guests discover Crazy Charlie Cherriebaum’s Gas & Fireworks Emporium, a haphazard roadside stand that proves fireworks, gasoline and lightning do not mix. After a surprise explosion, FireChaser Express is launched backward, through another section of track, ultimately delivering recruits to Station 7 in reverse!

FireChaser Express celebrates the volunteer-based fire departments of the 1940s which protected the neighboring Great Smoky Mountains National Park. During this time, firefighting trains were a common sight throughout the park. FireChaser Express’ passenger trains are themed to celebrate all firefighters who bravely battle perilous blazes to ensure the safety of others.

Dollywood is in its 29th season and features the spectacular entertainment of Festival of Nations through April 21. Mother Africa and La Danza de Colombia highlight the festival, which includes impressive displays of cultural activities and authentic cuisine from around the globe.

FireChaser Express is the latest addition to The Dollywood Company’s list of unique new rides. In March 2012, Dollywood opened the $20 million Wild Eagle, the country’s first wing coaster. In 2013, Dollywood’s Splash Country followed with the addition of RiverRush, Tennessee’s first and only water coaster.

Dolly Parton Appears as Hologram in Dollywood’s ‘A Christmas Carol’

Four actors appear via cutting-edge technology in new show featuring eight songs written by Parton

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. – Guests love the four million dazzling lights, award-winning entertainment and delicious food for which Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana is known. However, it may be one of Dollywood’s newest “performers” who leaves them buzzing.

New this year is the groundbreaking production of Dollywood’s A Christmas Carol, which uses holographic technology to bring Dolly Parton to the stage as the Ghost of Christmas Past. This special twist on Charles Dickens’ classic story marks the first time holograms have been featured in this family-favorite tale. Thanks to this new technology, Parton will perform, albeit as a hologram, in each performance.

Parton’s Ghost of Christmas Past, Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Present and Future are life-sized holograms, marking the first time four actors appear via the cutting-edge technology in the same theatrical production.

“When they told me they were going to make a hologram out of me, I thought they were crazy,” Parton said with a laugh. “But when I saw how real it looked on stage, I couldn’t believe it. I’m not sure this world can handle two Dolly Partons, but I’m excited folks will be able to see ‘the other Dolly’ reminding families that it’s not what you have but who you have, just like ole Scrooge figures out in the end.”

Set amid lavish Victorian scenery, Dollywood’s A Christmas Carol is underscored by eight powerful new songs written by Parton especially for this 45-minute musical of redemption and hope. Because the story is set in the U.K., Parton gave the music a classic U.K. feeling by infusing each song with classic Scots-Irish rhythms as well as musical and lyrical structures borrowed from traditional English folk songs.

This heartwarming tale about the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge features a 16-member cast, fully orchestrated musical tracks and period costuming.

Smoky Mountain Christmas continues through Jan. 4, 2014. Operating days and hours vary; visit Dollywood.com for details.

Several other beloved shows return, including Christmas in the SmokiesAn Appalachian Christmas‘Twas the Night Before ChristmasO’ Holy NightChristmas with The Kingdom Heirs and Carol of the Trees. Guests also can experience the nightly Parade of Lights, a festive procession of larger-than-life toys and characters, as well as Santa’s Workshop, where the smallest guests can share their wish list with Kris Kringle.

Dollywood’s popular Smoky Mountain Miniature Railroad returns after a well-received 2012 debut. This multi-level display features several model trains snaking through an elaborate and beautifully decorated miniature landscape. This kid-favorite attraction pulls in to the station at the Wings of America stage in Craftsman’s Valley.

Families can finish their visit with a traditional Christmas meal as Dollywood’s menus feature several holiday-themed items. Among the favorites are turkey breast with orange marmalade glaze, hickory-smoked London broil, cider-braised chicken, sweet potato casserole and mashed potatoes with turkey gravy. Dessert options include red velvet cake, apple bread pudding, apple cinnamon funnel cake, gingerbread cookies and more.

Smoky Mountain Christmas guests can upgrade a paid one-day admission ticket to a regular 2014 season pass for just $27 (plus tax). Ticket purchasers receive credit for the value of a one-day ticket ($56) toward the purchase of a 2014 season pass. A season pass purchased during Smoky Mountain Christmas provides unlimited admission to this year’s Christmas festival along with Dollywood’s entire 2014 season. (A one-day ticket is valid for upgrade on the day of visit only.) Also, guests who purchase a Dollywood one-day ticket after 6 p.m. receive free admission to the park’s next operating day.
