Class Descriptions

Unless otherwise noted, the class or lecture is designed for ALL skill levels. Any Material Fees listed are to be paid directly to the Instructor at the beginning of the specified class. After registering for classes, all relative supply lists will be sent directly to you.

Class Descriptions: Wednesday, March 9
#1: Selecting & Adapting Commercial Patterns for Wearable Art 9:00 a.m. to Noon CH-A Mary Mashuta $40 Learn how to evaluate and adopt commercial patterns for wearable art. Each student will learn to measure themselves accurately, add in wearing ease, do simple adjustments, and make additional allowances if the garment is to be quilted. Participants make a sample vest in muslin. All Skill Levels.
#2: Beginning Quilting 9 a.m. to Noon CH-B Bonnie Goolsby $40 This class is for the "want to be" quilter. Students will make a notebook to help you remember the basic sewing skills such as quarter inch seams, making points come together, mitered corners, and many more informative skill factors. Or, if you just have questions of your own you would like to have answered. Students will practice making some traditional blocks for your personal notebook. Beginner Skill Level.
#3: Quilts That Stand Out In A Crowd 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-C Mary Stori $60 Accentuate your quilting motifs with trapunto. Learn to adapt templates and designs for stuffing and cording, without damage to the quilt back. Learn Mary's easy approach to meander stipple quilting to further enhance the trapunto.it's addictive! Students will practice the techniques on a small whole-cloth wall quilt (fiddle head fern pattern provided) or make muslin samples if you prefer. The techniques easily translate to the machine. Handwork - some experience in basic hand quilting required. Supply Fee: $5
#4: Wildflowers 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-A Anita Shackelford $60 Stitch a bouquet of pansies and lily-of-the-valley tied with flowing ribbon. Techniques covered are free-form and lily-of-the-valley unit applique ribbon and embroidery in chain stitch, stem stitch and satin stitch. Intermediate Level.
#5: The Basics Of Heirloom Machine Quilting 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-B Harriet Hargrave $60 Unique machine quilting techniques that will turn quilt tops into heirlooms in a fraction of the time it takes to hand quilt will be taught. The actual sewing is a small part of machine quilting, the beginning of the class is lecture filled with valuable information so the student knows what to expect and can avoid the pitfalls along the way. Hands-on exercises will be used to develop machine- quilting skills, from walking quilt, ditch quilting to free motion feathers. Beginner Skill Level.
#6: More Beaded Techniques 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-C Mary Stori $40 You asked for it! This workshop introduces exciting beading techniques that have practical applications for quilts and garments. Students will create a reference sampler as they learn basic bead stitch, bead applique, picot stitch, branched fringe, netting, bead embroidery, and more. Be prepared to become addicted to the special effects, not to mention the fun beading provides. Handwork - no beading experience is necessary. Required $6 kit fee that includes beads, embellishment items and beading thread. Beginner Skill Level.

APPLIQUED FEATHERS 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-D Phyllis D. Miller $60 -
Feathers are not just for quilting designs! Add some fancy work to your quilts with appliqué feathers. Learn to draw feathers, shade them in fabric and the appliqué techniques to accomplish the ultimate in feather beauty.

#8: LECTURE: The Inside Story 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SS-E Harriet Hargrave $15 An in depth discussion of what is happening to batting in todays quilt market. Popular brand name products will be discussed, and quilts will be shown to evaluate what effect each product has on the look and personality of the finished quilt, as well as their characteristics and longevity. Fiber content will be examined, as well as specific considerations for the amount of quilting needed. This lecture is designed to give quilters lots of options and choices when choosing batting for each top. Harriet will give attendees testing processes to chase away any confusion. NOTE: This lecture is highly recommended before students take heirloom machine quilting, if at all possible.
#9: Mariner's Compass - Split To Center 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-F Judy Mathieson $60 The project is a 15" diameter star (pattern provided). Discussion of color and fabric choices. Most students are able to complete at least one-quarter of the design in class (and many complete the whole star!), which would give them the basic information about this precision sewing technique. Stitch along the folded edge of perforated freezer paper foundations and avoid the tearing out process. Machine piecing only. All Skill Levels.
#10: LECTURE: Find It, Buy It, Use It 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. SS-E Roberta Horton $15 Armchair travel with Roberta as she tours the world in search of fabrics for her quilts. Once these treasures are in hand, she next answers that great quilting questions; "What do I do with it?" Learn how to work with fabric that's new to you so that you too, can create a quilt that's a showcase for the colors and sites that you experienced.
#11: LECTURE: All Over Designs For Garments 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. SS-E Mary Mashuta $15 Recent emphasis in wearables has been to combine samples of many different techniques in one garment. Because there is much for the eye to stop and see, the garments tend to look busy. Mary has moved toward the idea of creating one all-over pattern for the entire garment. Most of the blocks she has devised are simple, but the cumulative effect is smashing. Less is truly more!
#12: LECTURE: Learning To Baby Your Singer Featherweight 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-D Polly Taylor $15 Bring no more than two featherweight machines for this hands-on lecture. Refer to the lecture supply list for additional items.
#13: LECTURE: Double Exposure 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. SS-E Roberta Horton and Mary Mashuta $15 Shared experiences.differing views. Sisters Roberta Horton and Mary Mashuta share a love of quiltmaking, fabric, and color. They also share common genes. Their shared visions are filtered through different minds and expressed by different hands. Hear how these sisters share a home (with 2 quiltmaking studios, of course!) and manage to produce quilts that express their own perspective and talent.
#14: Machine Embroidery & Quilts 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-F Bonnie Goolsby $40 If you have an embroidery machine and would like to make a remarkable quilt this is the class for you. Bonnie will show you how to hoop the fabric, choose the correct stabilizer, and create a masterpiece. Or, if you just want to quilt without adding the designs, you will learn that also. All Skill Levels.
#15: Machine Made Needle Lace 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-1 Shari Geissberger $60 Using the sewing machine and decorative threads, students will stitch on a water soluble stabilizer and create leaves and flowers then move on to learn how to make needle lace on a disintegrating stablizer. Great for three-dimensional embellishment for quilts and for embellishing clothing and home décor. Must be familiar with free motion stitching and basic sewing machine skills.
#16: Folk Art Quilts 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ND-2 Roberta Horton $40 Folk art translates as art done by "us folk". Have fun with Roberta as she helps you to create your own designs for an original quilt with a primitive feeling. She'll show you painless ways to machine applique, free-form piece, and mend and patch. Learn to create directly in the fabric using traditional fabrics.
#17: Try The Tri-Recs Ruler 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ND-2 Klaudeen Hansen $60 This small wall quilt features "long triangle" points surrounding a special print center. It is machine pieced. Size is 24" by 24". These long, narrow points are fun to try when the ruler makes them easy and accurate. Rulers will be available for use in class. Corner fabric placement discussed to help enhance the dimensional look of this piece. All Skill Levels.
#18: Reverse Applique By Machine 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ND-1 Shari Geissberger $40 Demonstrates the art of adding then subtracting, fabric layers much in the same manner as the mola technique. When using this method, the quilting defines the design much more than with traditional applique, as you are removing layers as opposed to adding layers. Based on Libby Lehman's technique with special permission. Basic sewing machine skills with knowledge of free motion technique.

#19: Nines in Nine 9 a.m. to Noon CH-A Klaudeen Hansen $40 The crazy quilt look from easy funky 9-patches. Skewed cuts and fabric sequence are the secret to creating the look without the work. Class includes demonstration on squaring and help choosing sashing and borders. All Skill Levels.

#21: Standing Tall For The Red, White & Blue 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-C Mary Stori $60 Show your American spirit by creating a fast pieced patriotic flag wall quilt that will sparkle with bead embellishments. Learn Mary's fun, yet easy beading techniques to create bugle bead stars and fringe dangles. You will depart with a new appreciation of the value and impact that bead work can add to quilts and will be eager to complete the "flag" at home. Bead Kit (required): $20 payable to Mary in class. All Skill Levels - no beading experience necessary.

A VICTORIAN DEBUTANTE 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-A Phyllis D. Miller $60 You will feel like a little girl playing paper dolls, only in fabric, as you learn appliqué and thread techniques to create a "little nine inch tall" Victorian lady dressed to make her debut in a summer ball gown.

#23: Evergreen and Holly Berries 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-B Anita Shackleford $40 Add flat and corded piping to your binding for a beautiful accent and more sophisticated finish using a machine. All Skill Levels.
#24: Eight Pointed Mariner's Compass 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CH-C Judy Mathieson $40 This class is designed to familiarize the student with a freezer paper foundation technique that does not sew through the paper. Use a fold back method that eliminates tearing out the paper after stitching. The class project is an 8-point star with a circle in the center (8" diameter star in a 9" block.) Machine work.
#25: Hearts & Flowers 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-D Anita Shackleford $60 Stitch a sentimental arrangement of hearts and flowers, berries and tendrils, all caught up in flowing ribbons. Techniques covered are corded stems, padded reverse appliqué, ruched flowers, free- form berries, unit-appliqué ribbon and embroidery embellishment. Advance Skill Level.
#26: LECTURE: One Flew Into The Quilting Nest 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SS-E Phyllis D. Miller $15
Join Phyllis in her quilting nest through this slide lecture/trunk show of finished and unfinished quilts. This lecture will inspire you with ideas as you hear quilt inspirations and "shouldn't have done it that way" stories.
#27: Drafting Lesson & Sewing Demonstration 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SS-F Judy Mathieson $40 Learn to draft classic Mariner's Compass radiating stars as well as ovals and circling geese with hands on work. Watch a demonstration on how to assemble these stars using a freezer paper foundation method with fold back technique. No sewing through the paper means no tearing out later.
#28: LECTURE: Contemporary Variations on Traditional Designs 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. SS-E Judy Mathieson $15 Traditional quilt patterns and how they are being used by contemporary quiltmakers. Includes a number of Judy's quilts.
#29: Textured Dimensional Landscape - Ft. Gratiot (Lighthouse) 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-F Shari Geissberger $60 This is a technique class, aimed at the student learning how to create a textured quiltscape that looks like it took months to make, but in reality is quite simple and quick to accomplish. Students will incorporate fusible applique, free motion stitching and will learn basic free motion thread work for detailed work. All Skill levels, but some free motion experience is helpful.
#30: You Can Improve Your Quilting Stitch 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-D Mary Stori $40 Learn to achieve small even stitches on the front and back of quilts. An indepth discussion covering the many aspects that impact the stitch such as; batting, needles, marking, hoops, and basting will provide a solid foundation to help you produce a fine quilting stitch. Mary will literally hold your hand as you learn the anatomy of the stitch, the why and how of every movement. All Skill Levels.
#31: LECTURE: Cotton Candy Quilts 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. SS-E Mary Mashuta $15 Busy, but fun prints. Feed sacks and reproduction prints from the 30's and 40's are the rage. You buy them, but can you cut into them. Mary gets you started with some fun blocks and tips for using these prints. Project blocks limited to one and two piece patterns so students can concentrate on color and design.
#32: LECTURE: Scrap Quilts: The Art of Making Do 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. SS-E Roberta Horton $15 Scrap quilts are the most humble of quilts and, at the same time, the most complicated of all quilts to understand and make. Roberta will provide you with the key to the interaction of fabrics, illustrating with both antique and newly made quilts. Topics will include color, value, temperature and mood.
#33: Straight Line Machine Quilting 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-1 Mary Mashuta $60 Mary is known for her even, precise machine quilting. She limits herself to straight lines and "soft" pivots using the walking foot. Learn the tricks-of-the-trade for coming up with simple designs for pieced blocks, sashing, and borders. Learn to prepare your top so you will end up with a flat quilt and how to successfully use a variety of threads. All Skill Levels.
#34: Japanese Patchwork 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-2 Roberta Horton $60 Experience working with Japanese Yukata cloth (100% cotton, 14" wide) used for summer kimonos. This class will deal with how to work with non-traditional fabrics in quilts. Topics will be methods of approach and design possibilities. Many new ideas for the quilter looking for new directions. (Japanese Yukata will be available for purchase in class.)
#35: Frame-A-Scene 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ND-1 Klaudeen Hansen $40 Do you have a special piece of fabric that is just too pretty to cut up and put in a quilt? This is the perfect project featuring a 9" to 10" section of fabric. Scenic or theme fabrics are great, perhaps a big floral or a patriotic piece. There are many possibilities! Beginner Skill Level with rotary cutting experience necessary.
#36: Cathedral Window By Machine 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ND-2 Bonnie Goolsby $40 This is one of the easiest ways to make a very different pattern. Almost all sewing is done by machine, but the "windows" are sewn in by hand. The finished quilt looks totally hand quilted, but can be finished in half the time. All Skill Levels.

#38: RUCHED HEART LYRE 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-A Phyllis D. Miller $60 Appliqué a lyre of leaves with a ruched heart and folded buds that is suitable to include in an album block collection. Good learning block for beginners.
#39: Mastering Invisible Machine Applique 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-B Harriet Hargrave $60 Enjoy learning true, professional techniques for beautiful machine applique. The latest products will be covered, as well as tried and true methods for achieving perfect applique by machine. Invisible machine applique techniques will give a hand applique appearance, and is Harriet's instant gratification technique. All Skill Levels (especially Beginners).
#40: Love of Many Colors 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-C Mary Stori $60 Who said wall quilts have to be square? This stiking, amish inspired long narrow quilt can be hung in the most unexpected display areas; the perfect solution when your home's wall space is already filled with quilts. We will combine numerous techniques such as string pieced heart applique units, "frame" fusing, decorative machine applique, flat piping, and a beading binding to assemble this striking quilt. You will enjoy learning these fun and effective methods which can easily be incorporated into future projects. All Skill Levels.
#41: Cherry Wreath 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-D Anita Shackleford $60 This adaptation of a traditional cherry wreath includes corded stem, padded fruit, a ruched butterfly, stem stitch and chain stitch embroidery. All Skill Levels.
#42: Waterwheel Spin 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-E Klaudeen Hansen $60 Easy machine piecing and the wide variety of fabrics makes these blocks fast and fun. Participate in the batik fabric exchange to achieve the same look as in the class sample. When these blocks are set without sashing alternate waterwheels appear like magic. A black print background gives a dramatic finished quilt. All Skill Levels.
#43: Mariner's Compass - Twilight Star 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-F Judy Mathieson $60 This class is designed to begin a large dramatic star in the style of Mariner's Compass. The project is a 24" or 30" diameter star that you might use in the center of a medallion quilt. Pattern provided. Use perforated freezer paper foundations to increase accuracy. #44: Stripes Go Contemporary 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-1 Mary Mashuta $60 Why waste time strip piecing to make contemporary quilts? Stripes look wonderful cut up and pieced in simple, abstracted blocks. Use Mary's two piece block that is easily changed, rotated, and recombined. Use commercially printed, tie-dyed, hand painted, or air brushed stripes. Anything goes as long as the pattern is "more or less straight lines running more or less parallel to each other." Example on the cover of Confetti Quilts. Templates available in class @ $8 each - 2 required.
#45: African-American Quilts 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-2 Roberta Horton $60 African-American quilts offer a wonderful opportunity for the average quiltmaker to break out of the traditional Euro-American quiltmaking mold and do some growing. These quilts feature bright high contrast colors and large designs, often with an off-set vertical strip construction as opposed to the more familiar grid format. Improvisation and surprise are stressed.

The latest products will be covered, as well as tried and true methods for achieving perfect satin stitch applique by machine. Satin stitch machine applique techniques will give a hand applique appearance, and is Harriet's instant gratification technique. All Skill Levels (especially Beginners).
#48: Unique Beading Tricks 9 a.m. to Noon CH-C Mary Stori $40 Bead embellishment have become one of the hottest trends in quilt making! Students will make a beaded reference sampler as they learn unique, easy fundamental beading techniques including the basic bead stitch, straight and curved line beading, scatter stitching, and the lasy stitch. We will also learn to attach beads, charms, buttons, trinkets, and unusual objects to quilts and garments. Mary offers an indepth discussion of beads; the care, storage, equipment needs and stabilizing methods for your quilt or garment projects. #49: The Bright Side - Beaded Bindings 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-C Mary Stori $40 Preview what Mary is predicting to be the newest trend in bead embellishment.quilt bindings decorated with beads!! Students will create a reference sampler of innovative (and very easy) techniques to create quilt bindings edged with beads. These bead accents will provide a gently framed or highly dramatic effect to quilts of all construction styles. #50: Folk Art Applique 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SS-D Anita Shackleford $40 Learn three different appliqué stitches while creating this bird and flower block adapted from an Ohio quilt dated 1889. Techniques covered are blind stitch, running stitch and blanket stitch. Focus on appliqué stitches. All Skill Levels.
#51: Double Wedding Ring Table Runner 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-E Klaudeen Hansen $60 Traditional table runner or wall hanging perfect for anniversary or wedding gift measures 18" by 42". Material Fee: $5 for interfacing payable to Klaudeen in class. ALL Skill Levels.
#52: Mariner's Compass - Circle In Center 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-F Judy Mathieson $60 Begin with a short lesson on the drafting principals behind radiating stars and includes the most common variations. The project is a 15'" diameter star (pattern provided) and students are encouraged to chose the variation suited to their skill level. Discussion of color and fabric choices. #53: Cookie Cutter Quilting 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. SS-D Anita Shackleford $40 Discover the charm of this folk art style of quilting sometimes used in the background areas of nineteenth century red and green quilts. Learn how to create your own designs, make templates and mark a quilt top. All Skill Levels.
#54: Trip Around The World 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-D Polly Taylor $40 This project oriented class will provide students with the wonderful beginning of a queen size quilt using a special technique of sewing 14 coordinating strips into a tube and re- cutting into the correct size. All Skill Levels
#55: Stack 'N Slash 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-E Shari Geissberger $40 Not to be confused with Stack 'N Whack, this is a new technique which is a lot less structured with formalities. Students learn how to create (crazy) pieced patchwork blocks which can be used in all types of quilts, used as yardage for cutting out vests and jackets, used for table runners, etc. Fun, quick and easy. All Skill Levels
#56: Chenille Wearables 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. SS-F Bonnie Goolsby $40 Learn the art of making chenille fabric. You will be surprised how easy it is to do. If you can mark a straight line and sew on it you can chenille. We will start the project you want to make. I fyou want to make a vest be sure to bring your vest pattern or you can start on a scarf or tote bag and I'll have a pattern for you. All Skill Levels.
#57: Amish Quilts 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-1 Roberta Horton $60 The Amish way of life is studied to gain a better understanding of these simple people. The Amish created several unique patterns which are a reflection of their lives. They also work with traditional American patterns making them Amish through their handling of color.
#58: Triangular String Quilts 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ND-2 Mary Mashuta $40 A great "hard times" quilt, machine pieced over paper or tear- away. Have fun using up the scraps of scraps and learn how to feel truly frugal.
#59: Star & Askew Nine-Patch Group Quilt 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ND-2 Mary Mashuta $40 A two-template block that looks hard, but isn't. Help design a group quilt while you're learning design and color placement. Learn to make the stars stand out and the nine-patch recede.

#60: REALISTIC ROSES 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-A Phyllis D. Miller $60
Create the illusion of real roses by learning how to use fabrics to make an appliquéd rose that looks like you could smell it. Learn how to use shading and many fabrics, plus some other tips to accomplish a realistic look. HAND INTERMEDIATE FULL DAY
#61: LECTURE: Caring For Today's Quilt Making Fabrics 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. CH-B Harriet Hargrave $15 So much fear is involved with the fabrics that quilters use today; bleeding, color migration, shrinkage, and fading being among the top concerns. This lecture is geared toward helping participants become more comfortable with what is happening to our fabrics today. Dye stability, thread count, pre-washing and vs. not chemicals and detergents, and recommended care of fabrics and quilts will be explored. This lecture has received rave reviews and has put confidence and choice making back into the quilter's hands, as well as saving untold yards of fabric and quilts. Based on Harriet's book From Fiber To Fabric.
#62: American Heritage 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CH-C Polly Taylor $60 A very stunning design with the log cabin center with the fans and log cabin blocks radiating around. Instead of the usual light and dark, patriotic reds and blues could be used. Both the fan and log cabin blocks are very old patterns. The blocks will measure 8". Cutting and sewing supplies are required. Intermediate to Advanced Skill Levels.

If you've put into practice what you have learned, you know the true secret is taking that information and putting it into practice. So what do you do after you practice? Even if you have not had the Heirloom Machine Quilting class, the same questions and concerns come up. "What do I do now?" Harriet feels that there is a definite lack of basic information in quiltmaking that causes endless frustrations and problems for quiltmakers and quilts alike. This class is structured as a lecture/discussion/round table format so that it is based on group participation.

Sample in patriotic colors, however many other three color combinations will also make a lovely quilt. Emphasis will be placed on efficient cutting and pressing. #66: Mariner's Compass & Beyond 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. SS-F Judy Mathieson $60 Learn how to draft round, oval and off center radiating stars directly onto freezer paper. This method allows students to easily draft their own version of a star in any size and with many versions of outside and inside shapes. Learn a new version of using perforated freezer paper foundations and avoid the paper tearing process.
#67: Oak Leaves & Bittersweet 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. SS-D Anita Shackleford $40 Create a fall wreath of oak leaves and free-form berries. Techniques covered are needleturn appliqué, stem stitch embroidery, free-form leaves and berries. All Skill Levels.

#69: Plaid Applique 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ND-1 Roberta Horton $60 Play with plaids and stripes in an applique format working quickly on the sewing machine.
