Class 1 – Beginner - $75

Virginia Walton

Kite-Tastrophy

Tuesday, March 20

8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Using the Multi-Angle, Wedge Ruler to design new blocks and quilts is addictive; in addition, with each new block several variations are possible.  This new dramatic Scrap Quilt is the result of creating an original block, then using different angles a wide variety of Kites is the result.  Learning ‘how to’ cut and sew more than one size angle is an essential part of this class which shows how to combine different angles (5 to 60 degree angles are possible) – without paper piecing.  These angles are easily sewn together due to the ‘starting to sew’ positions built into the protractor-like tool for each size angle. The Multi-Angle Wedge Ruler (w042R-$27.95) is required (available on line or in class).  Fabric kit fee of $35 is payable to the instructor in class.  Kit includes all of the fabric for the wall-hanging.  Sewing machine is required.  Visit Virginia’s web site at info@creativecurves.com.

The Basics of Heirloom Machine Quilting (2 day workshop)

Tuesday and Wednesday , March 20-21

8:30 – 4:00 pm

This two-day workshop offers anyone the opportunity to explore what traditional heirloom style machine quilting is all about, and an excellent start to mastering the techniques that make your quilts heirlooms in a fraction of the time of hand quilting, but with the same look.  This is a practical, basic class for machine quilting. Whether you have never quilted before, or have done some things but are not happy with the results, you will benefit greatly from this workshop.  Note – this is not long-arm style quilting or free form quilting. We work on drawn lines and strive for accuracy, not creativity in this class.

The first day focuses on an extensive discussion geared to clearing up problems with workspace, thread selection, preparing the quilt top for quilting among many other topics. Time will be spent in the afternoon working through problems with ditch and grid quilting. The second day is mainly hands-on experience with the darning (free motion) foot. Emphasis is put on maintaining even stitches and staying on the line, as well as continuous curve, free motion ditch quilting and echo quilting. Students will be quilting a feathered wreath accurately by the end of class. If time permits after sewing, we will discuss quilting larger projects and batting selection.  Sewing machine required.  Visit Harriet’s web site at http://www.harriethargrave.com/

Fish

Thursday, March 22

5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Working with wool fish appliques and needle felting adds a new dimension to a quilt top because you can make the appliques thicker, even 3-D, and you can blend colors in your designs to make them look more realistic.  This technique of poking wool fibers into wool appliques and backgrounds is totally portable.  Leave your sewing machine at home.  Instead, we will use a needle felting tool with three barbed needles to push colored wool fibers into wool appliques which sit on hand dyed wool backgrounds.  Hand embroidery adds another level of complexity, to enhance your scene, with corals and seaweeds.  Please come to Critter Pattern Works booth before the workshop to choose your $25 class kit which includes:  Woolly Fish pattern, 16”x 10” of your choice of hand dyed wool fabric, 2 baggies of hand dyed wool rovings (fibers), and wool fabric for fish appliques.  Sewing machine not required.

Here's your chance to get the inside scoop while learning how to make your next project even better! You'll discover how to de-code the judging comments, and how to evaluate your own quilts before you even enter them. Dawn will walk you through a typical judging process so you'll know what actually happens behind the closed doors of the judging room. Then you'll learn how to "judge" your own quilts before you even enter them, looking for areas of improvement. Finally, Dawn will show you tips to tackle the most commonly criticized parts of a quilt...the binding, squareness, tension, and design choice and execution.

Funky Feather Fun

Friday, March 23

8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Even though the traditional feather is much loved and revered in quilting, it’s not always the right choice for every fabric or quilt. Dawn’s years of experience as a professional longarm quilter led her to develop funky feather designs more suited to those great batiks, vibrant Hoffman fabrics, and colorful kids’ quilts. While each design still relies on the basic principles of feather quilting such as maintaining a spine or growing the same direction, the similarities stop there. You’ll first receive a “crash course” in the basics of feather quilting, and then you’ll take off with funky variations. Learn how to use the space both inside and outside the feather to create your design, and change the feather shape altogether for a truly unique style. You’ll even learn some “feather” designs that can work on those quilts for the men in your life, without being too feminine. In the afternoon, you’ll select your favorites from the drawing session and stitch them on fabric. This wonderful personal sampler will be a terrific reference as you decide what design to put on your next quilt—especially if it’s for your husband or son!  Kit fee of $30 payable to instructor in class.  Please arrive 30 minutes early to pay fee and settle in.  Class will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.  Kit includes:  Top and Backing Fabric, Batting, Thread, Bobbins and Class Workbook. Along with your kit fee, bring a Notebook and Pencil and Small Scissors for trimming threads to class.
