SUMMARY:Alcatraz East - Closing the Rock Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nClosing the Rock: The Anniversary of Alcatraz’s Last Day\nAlcatraz East’s newest exhibit will feature information\, photos\, and memorabilia from the famed prison. Highlighted objects include Al Capone’s rosary\, P.A.T.H. Alcatraz Artwork\, and Alcatraz guard handcuffs. The temporary exhibit will be displayed for one year and is included in the general admission price. \nAlcatraz was closed by the government in March 1963 due to the needed repairs and the high cost of operation. In 1969\, American Indians occupied Alcatraz for 19 months as they waged a campaign for civil rights. It was in 1972 that Congress established it as a national park\, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  \nAccording to the National Park Services\, 1.5 million people visit Alcatraz annually to roam the halls where such famous people as Al Capone\, “Machine Gun” Kelly\, and James “Whitey” Bulger served time. For three decades\, Alcatraz was considered one of the most secure prisons in the country because of its location on an island off San Francisco.  \nWith over 100 temporary and permanent exhibits that are crime-related\, Alcatraz East Crime Museum focuses on the history of crime\, crime scene investigation\, consequences of crime\, crime-fighting\, counterfeit crimes\, pop culture\, and more. There are numerous popular items on display for people to see\, including the famous white Bronco from the O.J. Simpson chase and Ted Bundy’s famous Beetle. There are several temporary exhibits always being offered\, which can be found online: https://www.alcatrazeast.com/temporary-exhibits/ \n[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”34104″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Alcatraz East - “Evil Intelligence: The Making of the Unabomber"
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s been nearly 28 years since the FBI arrested the domestic terrorist known as the “Unabomber.” Unsurprisingly\, it remains a subject of interest for people around the world. This case stands out from others because of the highly intelligent mastermind behind the crimes and the struggle law enforcement faced in apprehending the culprit. \nAlcatraz East Crime Museum is opening a new temporary exhibit titled “Evil Intelligence: The Making of the Unabomber\,” which will run from December 15\, 2023\, through April 19\, 2024\, and will be a part of the regular admission fee. \nThis exhibit will include information about how Theodore Kaczynski became a criminal\, the timeline of his crimes\, and how he was caught. The exhibit will also include information about the many people who investigated the case over the years\, trying to solve the mystery that terrorized the nation. Artifacts that will be on display include Unabomber passport photos\, handwritten documents from his cabin\, and saws that he used. \nFor 17 years\, Kaczynski mailed or delivered homemade bombs to people around the country\, all of which he hand-constructed in his Montana cabin. The FBI tried to figure out who was behind the crimes for years\, but they were unsuccessful until there was a major break in the case. Kaczynski anonymously mailed a 35\,000-word manifesto\, claiming responsibility for the crimes and saying the attacks would end if the manifesto was published. The government allowed The Washington Post to publish the document\, hoping that someone would recognize the author. They struck pay dirt when several leads pointed to Kaczynski\, including one from his brother\, who provided the FBI with additional writing samples. After determining that Kaczynski was the Unabomber\, they moved to arrest him in Montana. The Unabomber’s crime spree left three people dead and two dozen more injured. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
