Law enforcement officers are invited to visit during the week and explore the new exhibits dedicated to them and what they do for our communities. \nThe special week will celebrate all law enforcement officers and honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. During National Police Week\, all law enforcement officers can show their current badge for free admission into the museum. They will also be able to get half-off admission for up to four guests who accompany them. Tickets can be obtained at the box office when visiting. \nIn honor of National Police Week\, Alcatraz East Crime Museum will be adding new items to their Crime Fighting Gallery\, all related to K9 Aggie\, a Tennessee police K-9 from Collierville\, Tenn. K-9 Aggie was the sibling to one of Sevier County Sheriff’s Department’s first K-9 officers. Items to be added to the display include Aggie’s collar and favorite tennis ball. \nAdding to the celebration of Police Week\, Alcatraz East is inviting guests to check out the K-9 meet and greet that will be held on Friday\, May 15\, 2026\, from 10 am to 2 pm. The meet-and-greet will feature K-9 Merry and K-9 Diesel\, both from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s K-9 Division\, along with K-9 Juno from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s K-9 Division. All three of the K-9 officers are highly trained and serve as accelerant detection canine officers. They will be visiting with guests to share more about the important work they do in the field. These designated days give pedestrians and cyclists an opportunity to experience the 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road without motor vehicles. \nThinks to Know for Vehicle-Free Day: \n– Vehicle-Free Days are popular and parking is limited. Please park only in designated spots to protect pedestrians\, cyclists and roadside ecosystems. \n– Remember to purchase a parking tag online\, at the Great Smoky Mountains Welcome Center in Townsend or at fee kiosks at the Townsend Wye or Cades Cove before parking. \n– Avoid the morning rush by arriving in the afternoon. If there is no parking available in the morning\, you will need to leave and return later. The park may ticket or tow illegally parked vehicles. \n– Only bikes (including Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes) are allowed. No scooters\, skateboards or other non-motorized vehicles are permitted. Wear a helmet if you are biking\, and follow the posted 20 mile per hour speed limit. \n– Come prepared. The Cades Cove Loop Road has lots of hills and little tree cover. Pack plenty of snacks\, water and a first aid kit. There is no cell service\, so plan accordingly. Cyclists should bring a toolkit that includes spare inner tubes\, pumps\, tire levers and a multi-tool. \n– Weather can also be unpredictable\, so pack a rain jacket and dress appropriately for the temperature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The exhibit titled “The House Always Wins: How the Mob Built Vegas\,” opens on March 13\, 2026\, and will run through July 3\, 2026. The display will feature some authentic artifacts and commemorate the 95th anniversary of Nevada’s legalization of gambling\, which opened the door to the oasis in the desert that so many visit today. \nOn March 19\, 1931\, the state of Nevada legalized gambling in an attempt to lift the state out of the Great Depression. While gambling became legal that day\, it had been a common practice in the area for years before that. Once it was legal\, mobsters from other states saw it as an investment opportunity and began funding some of the casinos. They also moved the gambling houses from all downtown to what became known as the strip\, as they built luxurious hotels and\, later\, mega resorts.
