PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (Aug. 31, 2019) Pigeon Forge planning officials are seeking input from Pigeon Forge residents, business owners and employees and visitors to improve access to and use of the city’s six-lane Parkway (State Route 72/U.S. 441).
Now through Aug. 31, all are invited to participate in a survey here. Questions related to both short- and long-term goals are offered with regard to all modes of transportation, including motor and pedestrian.
Approximately 6,000 people reside in Pigeon Forge where tourism is the only industry. The city hosts more than 10 million visitors annually.
“Effective plans require input, and the City of Pigeon Forge is requesting that our residents, workers and visitors contribute to this survey,” said Pigeon Forge City Manager Earlene Teaster. “With sustained growth in tourism and development in Pigeon Forge, it is essential to create a transportation plan to ensure that the Parkway is as safe and as multi-modal friendly as possible.”
The Parkway is an essential corridor for Pigeon Forge, a gateway city to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the nation’s most visited. In 2017, the average annual daily traffic on the city’s major thoroughfare was estimated at 50,000 vehicles, making the Parkway one of the single most vital assets to the state of Tennessee and the surrounding communities.
The research study is funded by a Community Transportation grant which was awarded in 2018 by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. CDM Smith, a Nashville-based engineering and construction firm, is assisting Pigeon Forge city officials with the plan.
